Re2O (Elravie Re2O): Questions and Answers
Answers about Elravie Re2O, an injectable skin booster made in Korea from processed human acellular dermal matrix (hADM). It is aimed at the quality of the skin rather than at lifting, so these answers cover what it is, how it is regulated, what a course looks like, what it can and cannot change, and how Dr. Kim pairs it with energy devices.
What Re2O Is
What is Re2O?
Re2O, sold as Elravie Re2O, is an injectable skin booster developed in Korea by L&C Bio, a company that works with human tissue products. It is made from donated human skin that has been processed to remove its cells, leaving the dermal matrix, which is then broken into fine particles for injection. It is aimed at skin quality, such as fine lines, texture, dryness and thin skin, rather than at lifting or changing the shape of the face.
What does hADM mean?
hADM stands for human acellular dermal matrix. The dermis is the thick inner layer of the skin, and its framework between the cells is called the extracellular matrix, made mainly of collagen, elastin and other structural molecules such as hyaluronic acid. Acellular means the cells have been removed in processing, leaving that framework. In Re2O the matrix is particulated, broken into very fine pieces, so it can be injected into the skin.
How is Re2O different from other skin boosters?
Most skin boosters add one kind of ingredient: hyaluronic acid to hold water, polynucleotides to support the skin's repair environment, or synthetic particles that trigger collagen. In his column, Dr. Kim describes Re2O as a different kind of booster: rather than adding a single ingredient, it supplies finely processed hADM, the same structural material that makes up the skin's own support. The aim is to support the dermis directly. How much it does so, and for how long, is still being studied.
Who makes Re2O?
Re2O is made by L&C Bio, a Korean company known for human tissue products used in medicine, and Elravie is the name under which it is sold. The company's background is in processed donor tissue used in surgery, and Re2O applies the same kind of material in an injectable form for the skin. Knowing the maker matters because human tissue products are regulated differently from synthetic fillers and boosters.
Is Re2O a filler?
No. It is used as a skin booster, injected in small amounts across the skin to improve its quality, not to add shape or volume to a specific feature. It does not lift a cheek or fill a deep fold the way a volumizing filler does. Some people notice that thin areas look slightly fuller as skin quality improves, but if you want clear volume or contour change, other treatments are designed for that.
Is Re2O the same as collagen injections?
Not exactly. Older collagen injections used purified collagen, often from animal sources, as a temporary filler. Re2O uses a processed human dermal matrix that contains collagen together with other components of the skin's framework, such as elastin and hyaluronic acid, and it is used to support skin quality rather than to fill. The aim and the material are different, even though both involve collagen in some form.
Is Re2O the same as Sculptra?
No. Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic material that prompts the body to build its own collagen around the particles over months, and it is used mainly to restore volume and support. Re2O supplies human-derived matrix directly into the skin and is aimed at skin quality. They work by different mechanisms and solve different problems: Sculptra for lost volume, Re2O for thin, tired-looking skin.
What is acellular dermal matrix used for in medicine?
Sheets of processed donor dermis have been used for years in reconstructive surgery, for example to support tissue in breast reconstruction and in some wound and soft-tissue repairs. Surgeons use it as a scaffold that the body's own cells grow into. Re2O applies the same kind of material, broken into fine particles, to the skin. The long surgical history is reassuring about the material, but the injectable form for skin quality is much newer.
Why is it called a skin booster?
Skin booster is a general term for injectables placed in the skin to improve hydration, texture or quality, rather than to add shape. Re2O fits that description because it is injected in small amounts across an area to support the dermis. The term is a convenient category rather than a precise medical definition, and products called boosters can work in very different ways. What matters is what is in the product and what it is meant to do.
What does Dr. Kim say Re2O is for?
In his column, Dr. Kim lists the people Re2O tends to suit: those with fine lines and a general loss of elasticity, enlarged pores or an uneven balance of oil and moisture, dry and rough texture, hollowing under the eyes, along the smile lines or at the side of the cheeks in people who would rather avoid surgery or filler, and people who want to look after their skin before aging changes become marked. Each of these is a skin-quality concern rather than sagging.
Source, Regulation and Safety
Is Re2O made from human skin?
Yes. It is made from donated human dermis that has been screened and processed to remove the cells, leaving the matrix framework. Donors are screened, and removing the cells is intended to reduce the risk of immune reactions and of transmitting disease. Some people find the idea uncomfortable, and that is a reasonable reaction. Tell the clinic if you prefer not to receive a product made from human tissue, so other options can be discussed.
Is Re2O FDA-approved?
No. Re2O is not approved by the US FDA. In Korea it is supplied under the regulations for human tissue products, which are different from the rules for synthetic fillers. Published long-term data are still limited, and most information so far comes from short studies and clinical experience. If regulatory status matters to you, ask about it at consultation and consider it alongside other options.
Can Re2O transmit disease?
The risk is considered very low, because donors are screened and the tissue is processed to remove cells, which is intended to reduce the chance of transmitting infection. No product made from human tissue can be described as having zero risk. This is part of why human tissue products are regulated as a separate category in Korea. If you have specific concerns, ask the clinic about the product's source and processing before treatment.
Can I be allergic to Re2O?
Allergic or immune reactions are possible with any injected material, including tissue-derived products, though removing the cells is intended to reduce this. Tell the clinic about allergies, previous reactions to injections, and immune or autoimmune conditions before treatment. Swelling, redness or itching that increases over the following days, rather than settling, should be reported. Severe reactions are rare but need prompt medical attention.
What are the side effects of Re2O?
The most common are small raised bumps, redness and mild swelling at the injection points, which usually settle within the day or over a day or two. Bruising is possible, especially with blood thinners. Less common are lumps or uneven texture, usually temporary. Infection is rare with any injection; increasing pain, warmth and redness need prompt review. Because the product is relatively new, its long-term profile is less certain than older treatments.
Can Re2O cause lumps?
Lumps or uneven texture are possible and are usually temporary, settling as the material integrates into the skin. Small bumps right after injection are expected and usually flatten within the day. A lump that persists, grows or becomes painful should be shown to the clinic. Careful technique, the right depth and appropriate amounts help reduce the risk, which is why Dr. Kim stresses that the result depends on who injects it and how.
Can Re2O be dissolved if I don't like it?
Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, which can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, there is no established dissolving agent for a dermal matrix product in the same way. In practice, Re2O is placed in small amounts across the skin for quality rather than shape, and the bumps after injection usually settle on their own. This is one more reason to choose the injector carefully and to start from a clear plan.
Is Re2O safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Injections such as Re2O are generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Safety in these situations has not been established, and elective skin treatments can wait. Pregnancy also changes the skin temporarily, so it is more useful to assess the skin after those changes have settled. Tell the clinic if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Gentle skin care and sun protection are sensible ways to look after the skin in the meantime.
Who should not have Re2O?
Re2O is generally not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active infection or inflammation in the area, or to people who prefer not to receive a human tissue product. It also does not suit people whose main problem is sagging tissue or marked volume loss, or who expect a dramatic change from one session. Tell the clinic about allergies, immune conditions, blood-thinning medicines and recent treatments in the area.
Is Re2O available outside Korea?
Re2O is a Korean product supplied in Korea under the rules for human tissue products, and it is not approved by the US FDA. Its availability in other countries depends on each country's own regulations and may be limited. If you have a course in Seoul and wish to continue at home, ask your local doctor whether the product, or a comparable treatment, is available and permitted there before planning follow-up sessions.
The Treatment and the Course
How is Re2O injected?
Re2O is injected into the skin in small amounts across the treatment area, with fine needles or a cannula, after the skin has been cleansed and numbed. The injector chooses the depth and the spacing of injection points for the area and the skin's thickness. The aim is even placement within the skin rather than shaping a feature. Small raised bumps at the injection points are expected and usually settle within the day.
How long does a Re2O session take?
According to Dr. Kim's column, the injection itself takes roughly ten minutes. Numbing cream applied beforehand adds time, and the full visit is longer if Re2O is combined with a device such as Thermage or Ulthera. A short session makes it practical to add to other treatments or fit into a busy schedule, including a short visit to Seoul. Ask the clinic for an estimate of the whole appointment.
Does Re2O hurt?
Most people feel small pricks and some pressure as the product is injected. In his column, Dr. Kim writes that numbing cream is usually enough. Thinner and more sensitive areas, such as under the eyes, can feel more uncomfortable. The session is short, which helps. Tell the injector if something feels sharper than expected, so the technique or pace can be adjusted. Any soreness afterwards is usually mild and fades within a day or so.
How many Re2O sessions do I need?
Dr. Kim writes that one session can already help, and that around three sessions spaced three to four weeks apart give a fuller effect. The actual number depends on how your skin responds, your concerns and your schedule. It is reasonable to see how your skin reacts after the first session before committing to more. The course is decided by the skin's response rather than by a fixed package.
How far apart should Re2O sessions be?
In his column, Dr. Kim describes sessions about three to four weeks apart. That interval gives the skin time to respond and lets any bumps and swelling settle fully before the next session. If you are visiting Seoul for a limited time, ask whether the course can fit your travel dates, or whether one session now and further sessions later makes more sense. The spacing is adjusted to how your skin responds.
Is there downtime after Re2O?
Usually little. Dr. Kim writes that the slight raised bumps and redness after injection mostly disappear on the same day. Some people have mild swelling or a small bruise for a few days. Most people return to normal activities straight away. If you have an important event, allow a few days in case of bruising, especially if Re2O is combined with a device treatment in the same visit.
When can I wear makeup after Re2O?
In his column, Dr. Kim advises no makeup on the day of treatment. Waiting until the next day lets the injection points close and lowers the chance of irritation or infection. When you start again, use clean brushes and products. If bumps or redness remain, apply makeup gently and avoid pressing on the injected areas. Follow any specific advice from the clinic for your skin.
What should I avoid after Re2O?
Dr. Kim's column advises avoiding alcohol, saunas and smoking for about a week after treatment, and makeup on the day itself. Avoiding heavy exercise for a day or two and not rubbing or massaging the injected areas is also sensible. Gentle cleansing, moisturizer and sun protection are fine. Increasing pain, warmth or redness in the days after treatment should be reported to the clinic.
Which areas can Re2O be used on?
Re2O is mainly used on the face for skin quality: the cheeks, the area under the eyes, along the smile lines and at the side of the cheeks, where thin or crepey skin and fine lines are common. The neck is sometimes considered for crepey skin. Injections near the eyes need particular care with depth and technique. The areas are chosen from your specific concerns, not a fixed map.
How long before a wedding or event should I have Re2O?
Allow enough time for the course you want and for any bruising to fade. Bumps and redness usually settle within the day, but a small bruise can take a week or so to clear. If you want the fuller effect Dr. Kim describes from around three sessions three to four weeks apart, start about two to three months ahead. Avoid having a first-ever session just before the event, when you do not yet know how your skin reacts.
Can Re2O be used under the eyes?
In his column, Dr. Kim lists hollowing under the eyes among the concerns Re2O may suit, for people who would rather avoid surgery or filler. The skin under the eyes is very thin, so the injector's technique and depth matter more there than almost anywhere else on the face. Not every under-eye problem is a skin problem: fat bags and deep hollows need other approaches. An examination comes first.
Results and Who It Suits
When do Re2O results show?
Some people notice the skin feels more hydrated or smoother within days to weeks, but changes in texture and thickness develop gradually as the skin responds. Dr. Kim writes that one session can already help and that around three sessions give a fuller effect, so the overall result is often judged after the course. The change is subtle and varies a great deal between people.
How long do Re2O results last?
This is not well established yet, because the product is relatively new and published long-term data are limited. Results vary with age, skin condition, sun exposure, smoking and how many sessions were done. Maintenance, if wanted, is usually decided by how long the improvement holds for you rather than a fixed schedule. Be cautious of any precise promise about duration. Keeping photographs from before the course and a few months after it is the most reliable way to judge how long the change lasts for you.
What results can I realistically expect from Re2O?
Re2O aims at skin quality, so the changes are subtle: skin that looks smoother, less crepey and more even, and may feel more supple and hydrated. It does not change the shape of the face or tighten the jawline. Some people notice a clear difference in texture; others notice little. If the deeper support has loosened too, improving the skin alone may leave the overall look much the same.
Does Re2O lift the face?
No. Re2O aims at skin quality, such as texture, fine lines and thickness, not at lifting. Sagging comes from deeper layers, the fat under the skin and the supporting SMAS layer, which a booster in the skin does not reposition. For that, a lifting treatment such as Ulthera is more relevant, or surgery when sagging is marked. Re2O can be combined with these when the skin also needs attention.
Can Re2O help with enlarged pores?
Dr. Kim lists enlarged pores and an uneven balance of oil and moisture among the concerns Re2O may suit. Improving the quality and support of the dermis can make pores look a little less obvious. Pores are also influenced by oil production, genetics and sun damage, so results vary, and other treatments designed for oiliness or surface texture may be needed as well. Expect a modest change rather than a complete one.
Can Re2O help acne scars?
Re2O is not mainly a scar treatment, and evidence for it in acne scars is limited. It may improve general skin texture, which can make shallow scarring look slightly softer, but deeper or tethered scars usually need treatments designed for them, such as resurfacing, subcision or energy-based methods. If acne scars are your main concern, discuss options aimed at scars specifically.
Is Re2O good for dry skin?
Dr. Kim lists dry, rough skin texture among the concerns Re2O may suit. The matrix contains components such as hyaluronic acid and collagen that are part of the skin's natural structure, and improving the dermis may help the skin hold moisture better. A good moisturizer and protecting the skin barrier remain important. Dry skin can also have medical causes, such as eczema or thyroid problems, which should be managed first. Dry indoor air and long flights make dryness worse, so a richer moisturizer helps when traveling.
Is Re2O suitable for people in their 20s and 30s?
It can be. Dr. Kim lists people who want to look after their skin before aging changes become marked among those Re2O may suit. Younger skin generally responds well to treatments that rely on the skin's own repair. That said, sun protection, not smoking and good skin care do a great deal at this age, and a booster is optional rather than necessary. The decision depends on a real concern, not age alone.
Is Re2O suitable for mature skin?
It can help the quality of mature skin, such as thinning, fine lines and dryness. Expectations need to match the layers involved, because in mature faces the deeper layers, fat and bone often contribute more to the overall look than skin quality alone. A booster placed on skin that is really sagging, or on a face that has lost volume, is likely to disappoint, which is why Dr. Kim assesses every layer before choosing one. Combining Re2O with a lifting or volume treatment is often more useful at this stage than Re2O alone.
Is Re2O suitable for men?
Yes. Men can have the same skin-quality concerns: fine lines, rough texture, enlarged pores and dryness. Men's skin is generally thicker, and the beard area has more hair follicles, which the injector takes into account when choosing depth and spacing. As with anyone, the treatment suits concerns in the skin itself rather than sagging or volume loss.
Re2O With Thermage, Ulthera and Other Treatments
Why does Dr. Kim combine Re2O with energy devices?
In his column, Dr. Kim notes that Re2O can be used alone, but that it is often paired with focused ultrasound such as Ulthera or with radiofrequency such as Thermage. The device works on lifting and firmness, while Re2O works on the quality and structure of the dermis. Combining them means two layers, or two aspects of the same layer, are treated in one plan, rather than expecting one tool to do everything.
Can Re2O and Thermage be done on the same day?
Yes. When done on the same day, the device treatment is commonly performed first and the injections afterwards, so the injected material is not heated or pressed by the treatment tip and the injection bumps do not interfere with even contact. Separate visits may be preferred for sensitive skin, to see how the skin reacts to each, or to limit visible bumps before an event. See Can Thermage and Re2O be done on the same day?
Can Re2O be combined with Ulthera?
Yes. Dr. Kim mentions focused ultrasound such as Ulthera among the devices Re2O is often combined with, so that lifting of the deeper support and repair of the dermis are addressed together. Ulthera works on the SMAS and fat at set depths, while Re2O works within the skin. As with Thermage, the device treatment is usually done first when both are given in one visit.
Which should come first, Re2O or a device treatment?
On the same day, the device is usually first and Re2O second. Injected material should not be heated by the device or pressed by the treatment tip, and raised bumps from injection can get in the way of even contact. When treatments are on separate days, either order can work, and the spacing depends on how your skin reacts. The clinic decides the sequence for your plan.
Can Re2O be combined with Botox?
Yes. Muscle-relaxing injections soften lines caused by movement, while Re2O works on the quality of the skin. They address different causes and are often used in the same plan. They can be given at the same visit or separately. Avoid rubbing or massaging the injected areas afterwards, and tell the clinic about all injections you have had recently so the plan accounts for them.
Can Re2O be combined with filler?
It can be planned alongside filler, but the two do different jobs. Filler adds volume or shape to a specific area, while Re2O improves skin quality across an area. Dr. Kim lists Re2O as an option for people with hollowing who would rather avoid filler, which shows they are alternatives in some cases and partners in others. Tell the clinic about filler already in the areas to be treated.
How does Re2O compare with Rejuran?
They work differently. Rejuran is a polynucleotide booster, made from DNA fragments, often from salmon, thought to support the skin's repair environment. Re2O supplies human acellular dermal matrix directly to the skin. Both aim at skin quality, and head-to-head comparisons are limited, so neither can be called better in general. A fuller comparison is in Re2O, Rejuran and other skin boosters: how do they differ?
Can Re2O be done after a laser treatment?
Often yes, with spacing that depends on the laser. After a gentle laser, a short gap may be enough; after a stronger resurfacing laser, the skin needs time to heal before injections. Injecting into skin that is irritated or broken increases the risk of infection. Tell the clinic what laser you had, when, and how your skin reacted, so the timing can be planned. Some clinics plan lasers and boosters in a set order within a course, so ask how they fit together.
Can I get a facial or massage after Re2O?
It is better to wait. Massaging or pressing on freshly injected areas can move the product and irritate the injection points, and steaming or heat treatments in a facial work against the advice to avoid saunas for about a week. Gentle cleansing at home is fine. Ask the clinic when it is safe to resume facials and massage, usually after the first week. Facial devices used at home, such as heated or microcurrent tools, are best paused for the same period.
How do I decide whether I need Re2O, Thermage or both?
By identifying which aspect of the skin and face has changed. Loose, less firm skin points toward a firming treatment such as Thermage; thin, dry, crepey or dull skin points toward a skin-quality treatment such as Re2O; many people have both. Deeper sagging or volume loss calls for other treatments. Dr. Kim writes that lifting should start by looking at every layer to find the cause, and the choice follows from that examination.
